Microdermabrasion Part 2: Crystal Versus Diamond Tip

One of the greatest considerations in microdermabrasion treatment is the type of treatment you’ll be receiving. In microdermabrasion, one of two main methods is employed: a machine which ablates your skin using crystals, or one that abrades your skin using a diamond-tipped wand.

Both of these methods are highly effective and will adequately resurface your skin. Choosing the one that’s right for you is a highly personal decision. Let’s examine these methods:

Crystal microdermabrasion relies on a machine blasting your skin with tiny aluminum oxide or sodium bicarbonate crystals. The machine resurfaces your skin by ablation, which means to clear away all of the dead skin cells, through a forceful use of heat and fusion. The effectiveness of the treatment is very much dependent on the quality and maintenance of the machine. The crystal method is older and has withstood the test of time, though that may be where its benefits end.

Crystal microdermabrasion cannot be used near the eyes or lips because of the small possibility of some crystals escaping the machine and causing injury. The crystals may also escape the machine and enter the atmosphere, where they may pose health problems if inhaled accidentally.

Diamond tip microdermabrasion relies on a wand with a diamond tip that abrades the surface of the skin to sand away the outer layer. Because it doesn’t have any crystals and nothing exits the machine during the treatment, diamond tip microdermabrasion is considered generally safer. It’s success is also largely dependent on the esthetician operating the machine instead of the machine itself. The machine is a useful tool in the hands of an otherwise capable, experienced esthetician.

Diamond tip microdermabrasion is also superior to crystal microdermabrasion in that it can be used on sensitive areas such as around the eyes and lips. Since this is a part of the face where most people want to see results, it’s easy to understand why diamond tip microdermabrasion is a vastly superior form of microdermabrasion to the older, crystal method.
